  • Students must be of legal age, which is over 18 years old.

  • If a dependent spouse possesses high skills and obtains sponsorship from a Tier 2 licensed employer independently, it is important to note that they cannot switch their visa status to a Tier 2 General Visa while already in the country.

To apply for a student visa, you will need the following:

  • A valid passport or any other travel document.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses throughout your course. These funds should be maintained for 28 consecutive days and include both tuition fees and living costs.
  • A CAS reference number (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) provided by your university.
  • Relevant documents required to obtain the CAS, which will be specified by your university.
  • Recent passport-sized color photographs.
  • If necessary, you may need to undergo a screening for Tuberculosis.
  • Your university will inform you of any additional requirements, if applicable, prior to submitting your application.

  • To continue their stay in the UK, these students can transition from a Tier 4 Visa to a Tier 2 General Visa, which grants them a five-year validity period.
  • The work experience gained during their post-study employment can be beneficial when applying for permanent residence in the United Kingdom.

Under the dependent visa category, your family members, including your spouse and dependents, have the opportunity to accompany you or remain with you while you pursue your studies in the UK.

The term “dependent” encompasses the following individuals:

  • Husband, wife, or civil partner
  • Same-gender partner
  • Children below the age of 18, as well as children born in the UK during your stay

To be eligible to bring a dependent, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You have been sponsored by a higher education institution for a Level 7 course that lasts for a minimum of 9 months.
  • You are enrolled in a government-sponsored course with a duration exceeding 6 months.
  • If you are a doctorate student, you are part of an extension scheme.

When to apply for a dependent visa:

A dependent can submit their application simultaneously with the UK Student Visa applicant or after the student has received the outcome of their visa application.

If the student has applied for further leave to stay in the UK after their studies but has not yet received a decision, family members will need to wait until the student’s permit is approved before submitting their entry clearance application.

Where to apply:

Similar to a Student Visa application, dependents should apply from their country of nationality or country of residence. The application process is typically done online, and a separate application must be completed for each dependent.

In most countries, an appointment is scheduled for biometrics enrollment and submission of supporting documents at a visa application center as part of the online application.

Financial requirements:

Dependents applying for a visa must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover their living expenses in the UK. The requirement is £680 per month for the duration of the visa, up to a maximum of 9 months. Therefore, a total of £6,120 per dependent is needed if the visa is granted for a period of 9 months or more (9 x £680).

A bank statement or bank letter may be required as proof of funds, and the funds must be held in the name of the student or the spouse/partner. If the UK Student Visa holder has an official sponsor responsible for covering the living expenses of the dependent, a letter from the sponsor stating this can be submitted to meet the financial criteria.

International students who have successfully graduated in the UK while holding a valid student visa are allowed to remain in the country if they receive a job offer with an annual salary of at least GBP 20,800.

To continue their stay in the UK after completing their studies, these students are required to switch to a Tier 2 General Visa, which grants them a duration of up to five years.

The work experience gained during their employment can potentially contribute to their eligibility for permanent residence in the UK. However, it is important to note that in order to qualify for permanent residence, their annual income must be at least GBP 35,000.
